Abstract:
PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of displaying high- quality images by taking advantage of excellent characteristics of a surface stabilizing ferroelectric liquid crystal, and restricting a reverse electric field generated at the time of driving the device. CONSTITUTION:A surface stabilizing ferroelectric liquid crystal 1 for reversing spontaneous polarization by externally applying an electric field to a ferroelectric liquid crystal in which permanent dipole moments are the same and lined up in one direction, and spontaneous polarization exists with any electric field not applied externally, and a pulse voltage applying means 2 for applying positive and negative bipolar pulse voltages to the surface stabilizing ferroelectric liquid crystal 1 are provided. In this case, in relation to a positive or negative pulse voltage applied by the above pulse applying means 2, a negative or positive opposite polarity pulse voltage is applied to the above surface stabilizing ferroelectric liquid crystal 1.
