To enable liquid crystal display with sufficient lightness by arbitrary colors at a low cost by providing the device with a monochromatic liquid crystal display element and a back light means consisting of LEDs of different colors arranged on the rear surface of this monochromatic liquid crystal display element.
This liquid crystal display device includes the monochromatic liquid crystal display element 17 arranged with liquid crystal shutters in a bar graph shape and the back light means consisting of the LEDs 15 of the three primary colors arranged on the rear surface side of the monochromatic liquid crystal display element 17. The display of the desired bar graphs is made possible by opening and closing the liquid crystal shutters of the monochromatic liquid crystal display element 17 and making the LEDs 15 of the back light means emit light. At this time, the inexpensive monochromatic liquid crystal display element 17 is used as the liquid crystal display element and, therefore, the cost over the entire part is reduced. Since the LEDs 15 consist of the three primary colors, the back light illumination with the arbitrary colors is made possible. The bar graph display in many and versified design characteristics is thus made possible.
