PURPOSE: To perform excellent orientation with regard to a matrix liquid-crystal display panel that uses a switching element, by forming the switching element in a recess previously provided in the substrate for every picture element.
CONSTITUTION: Groove 11, previously made in substrate 1, is applied and filled with row electrode 3, which is baked. Next new groove 12 is provided overlapping with groove 11 and applied with varistor 5, which is baked to form a switching element. Then, the top surface of varistor layer 5 is ground to make groove 13, where electrode 6 is provided, so that the substrate with the flat surface can be obtained. Next, even orientation of liquid crystal can be obtained over the entire surface by providing picture-element electrode 7 through using this substrate.
