To provide an LED having little scattering and increased conversion efficiency.
The semiconductor LED comprising a light-emitting layer arranged between an n-type region and a p-type region is combined with a ceramic layer arranged, in a path of light emitted by the light-emitting layer. This ceramic layer is composed of wavelength converting material like phosphor or contains the wave conversion material. The luminescent ceramic layer according to the embodiment of the present invention is more robust and less sensitive to temperature than the phosphor layer of prior art. Furthermore, the luminescent ceramic generates a small amount of scattering. As a result, its conversion efficiency can be increased, as compared with the phosphor layer of prior art.
