To obtain a product useful for treating cholesterolemia by lysing a biomass formed by bacteria belonging to the genus Arthrobacter and by supporting the resultant cell membranes on the lysate.
A biomass composed of bacteria such as Arthrobacter pascens which is cultured in a medium containing cholesterol as carbon source (its concentration being pref. 0.5-5 wt.%) under such growth promoting conditions as to help proliferate the cells in the medium, mutant, variant or recombinant thereof is separated and recovered during the stationary stage of the incubation, the supernatant is discarded, and the biomass is then lysed; the resultant cell membranes and the intracellular components and fragments from organella are supported upon the lysate, thus obtaining the objective product. Preferably the biomass is recovered by filtration using a membrane 0.5 μm in pore diameter.
