To provide a magnetic recording medium of a metal magnetic thin film type which has high coercive force and in which high reproduction output and C/N are obtained in short wavelength recording.
This medium is a magnetic recording medium having a metal thin film magnetic layer 2 on a non-magnetic support 1, the metal thin film magnetic layer 2 consists of an initial growth part 2a on the support 1 plane and a latter period growth part 2b on the initial growth part 2a, the initial growth part 2a is a part in which crystal particles constituting the metal thin film magnetic layer 2 are grown almost linearly in the almost vertical direction for the support 1, the latter period growth part 2c is a part in which the crystal particles are grown in a semi-circle arc type in the direction of the prescribed tilt angle for the support 1. The manufacturing apparatus is provided with an evaporation-material/oxygen mixing chamber in which the supporter side is opened and an oxygen gas supply opening is provided inside, in the vicinity of a vapor deposition start point.
