PURPOSE: To improve electromagnetic conversion characteristics, traveling durability, etc., by adding spherical particles of a specified particle size to the uppermost magnetic layer by a specified range to the magnetic powder.
CONSTITUTION: The magnetic layer consists of two or more layers, and to the uppermost layer, spherical particles of particle size 0.5 - 1.5 time as large as the thickness of the uppermost layer are added by 0.1 - 1 pts.wt. to 100 pts.wt. of the magnetic powder. By adding these spherical particles to the uppermost layer, projections are formed on the surface since the uppermost layer is rather thin. These projections decrease the contact area of the medium and the coefft. of friction when the medium slides on a magnetic head, cylinder, or traveling pins of a video tape recorder. Thereby, the medium has stable traveling property for repeated traveling. Moreover, it is more effective to treat the spherical particles with a silane coupling agent, etc.
