PURPOSE: To enable easy preparation of a magnetic recording thin film medium which provides an increased recording density and output, by forming a parallel magnetization film of a thin iron oxide film, and a perpendicular magnetization film of an iron oxide film mixed with osmium.
CONSTITUTION: To laminate a parallel magnetization film 2 and a perpendicular magnetization film 1 on a substrate 3, an iron oxide parallel magnetization film containing no Os is first formed, and an iron oxide film layer containing 3W6% Os is then deposited thereon. When this laminate is annealed in a magnetic field thereafter, the lower layer containing no Os remains as the parallel magnetization film 2 since no inductive anisotropy is given thereto, whereas the upper layer containing Os becomes a perpendicular magnetization film 1 which has a magnetic anisotropy in a direction perpendicular to the film plane. In consequence, when recording is effected on this medium, recorded bits are perpendicular in the upper layer, and the lower layer serves to concentrate the magnetic flux, so that the reproducing sensitivity and output are increased.
