Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high optical enhancement effect by laminating magnetic layers and dielectric layers with irregularly and periodically in layer thickness to constitute a magneto-optical multilayered film.
SOLUTION: The magneto-optical multilayered film 1 used for an optical isolator consists of magnetic layers 11 and dielectric layers 12 alternately deposited. The magnetic layers 11 and dielectric layers 12 are deposited with irregular thicknesses. The light which enters the magneto-optical multilayered film 1 propagates in the depositing direction of layers and outgoes with the polarization plane rotated by 45 degrees (whole rotation angle). Thereby, a significant enhancement effect is obtd. and a larger magneto-optical effect can be obtd. with a thinner magneto-optical multilayered film. The film thickness ratio of the all magnetic layers 11 is <10%, or 15 to 30% or 35 to 50% to the whole film thickness. The film thickness ratio of the all magnetic layers 11 to the whole film thickness is preferably controlled in such a manner that the reflectance of light entering the film shows an opposite peak against increase or decrease in the film thickness ratio.
