Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain an MR head capable of preventing the change of magnetization of a soft magnetic layer due to an external magnetic field.

CONSTITUTION: The head is provided with an MR layer 13 and a layer 11 which is layered on the MR layer 13 via a non-magnetic conductive layer 12 to add a lateral bias magnetic field to the MR layer 13. The magnetic field HA when the layer 11 starts to be magnetized in a reverse direction is set to be larger than an external magnetic field impressed to the layer 11 from a magnetic recording medium.
