Abstract:

In the process for making alkyl methacrylates from acetone cyanohydrin and H₂SO₄, it has been found that alkyl 2-hydroxy-2-methyl proprionate made during the process can be collected and returned to the process sequence just prior to the esterification step where it can be dehydrated to alkyl methacrylate.
