PURPOSE: To manufacture metallic Mg by mixing light burned magnesia with a powder carbonaceous reducing agent and rapidly cooling a mixed gas of Mg and CO obtd. by reducing the MgO in a heating furnace.
CONSTITUTION: As raw material for Mg, light burned MgO is used which is obtd. by calcining Mg(OH)2 or MgCO3 at 800W1200°C. The carbonaceous reducing agent may be carbon black, artificial graphite or oil coke. Mixt. 6 of the above powder raw materials is charged into reaction chamber 2 of heating furnace 1 from raw material charge pipe 5, heated to above 1850°C, and reacted to form gaseous Mg and CO. At this time, an inert gas such as H, N or He is spouted from nozzle 4 of cooling gas introduction pipe 3 and passed through the upper part of chamber 2 as a jet current. The gaseous Mg and CO are forced to be sucked into cooling chamber 8 and rapidly cooled to deposit finely divided solid Mg. The solid Mg is gathered and refined to high purity Mg by distillation.
