PURPOSE: To form an optional pattern part to be a mirror-finished recess by forming the optional pattern part where the surface is exposed and a protecting film part having the reversed pattern, and selectively grinding only the surface part by puff grinding.

CONSTITUTION: As shown in Fig. (a), a heat proof organic mask 2 of any pattern is formed on a stainless surface 1 which is mirror-finished, marked with stripes or treated by honing. A TiNxCyOz film 3 which is hard and highly resistive to abrasion is coated all over the surface 1 including the mask 2 by, for example, ion plating. When the mask 2 is removed, the protecting film 3 which has the pattern reversed to the optional pattern is obtained as shown in Fig. (b) and the surface 1 of the patterned part is exposed. If the exposed part is puff- ground, a puff-ground face 4 which is mirror finished and recessed can be formed as indicated in Fig. (c).
