PURPOSE: To improve the toughness of the welded joint of a steel plate as well as the toughness of the central part in the thickness direction by subjecting a steel contg. specified components to heating, rolling and cooling under prescribed conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A steel consisting of, by weight, 0.02W0.30% C, 0.05W1.0% Si, 0.50W2.50% Mn, 0.02W0.1% Mo, 0.005W0.10% Al and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities is heated to the Ac3 point W 1,050°C and rolled at the Ar3 point W 850°C and 50W70% draft. The resulting steel plate is water-cooled and tempered. One or more among ≤1.0% Cr, ≤0.20% V and ≤2.0% Cu are added to the compsn. as required or one or more among ≤4.5% Ni, ≤0.20% Ti and 0.0005W0.005% Ca are further added. By this method, not only the toughness of the central part of the steel plate in the thickness direction but also the toughness of the weld heat-affected zone of the welded joint can be improved, so a steel plate suitable for a marine structure of the like requiring toughness at low temp. can be obtd.
