PURPOSE: To enable thermal transfer recording in continuous gradation mode by providing a thermal transfer recording layer applied with coating liquid prepared through melting and blending using mutually non-soluble organic resistant colors having varying thermal transfer initiation temperatures on a heat- resistant base film.
CONSTITUTION: A coating liquid is prepared by blending and solving mutually non-soluble organic resins, one having a low thermal transfer initiation temperature and the other a high thermal transfer initiation temperature, with colors, in a solvent. This liquid is applied to the surface of a heat-resistant base film to provide a thermal transfer recording layer. Thus the thermal transfer recording sheet is formed. It is recommended that for better performance the melting point or softening point of high-temperature resin be more than 10 degrees higher than that of low-temperature resin. The colors used are ordinary pigments for printing or as paint or dyes. However, a mixture of pigment and dye is preferred from a viewpoint of continuous gradation characteristics. The best choice is inorganic pigments such as carbon black or red ocher.
