To provide an industrial manufacturing method of 2-(4-biphenyl)ethanol by economically short steps without using a large amount of solvents, and to provide a method for simply purifying 2-(4-biphenyl)ethanol containing an impurity having a relative retention time of 0.47 in the HPLC by crystallization using a specific solvent system.
4-Biphenylacetic acid is halogenated in the presence of a dialkylformamide in a single solvent selected from among toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, hexane and heptane or a mixed solvent thereof as a hydrocarbon solvent and subsequently caused to react with methanol to give methyl 4-biphenylacetate, which is reduced by lithium aluminum hydride and crystallized from a solvent system comprised of methanol and water to give 2-(4-biphenyl)ethanol.
