To provide a material for medicaments or health foods capable of effectively exerting active oxygen scavenging ability, immunopotentiative action and antiallergic action as biological activities, and to provide a method for producing the material.

This material for medicaments or health foods comprises a solvent extract from a plant belonging to the genus Compositae/Baccharis: wherein the plant is desirable to be Baccharis dracuncurifolia, and its new leaves of buds are more desirable to be used; a caffeic acid, coumaric acid, cinnamic acid, chlorogenic acid and derivative thereof are desirable to be contained; in addition, flavonoids or terpenoids are more desirable to be contained. This material for medicaments or health foods comprising the solvent extract from the above plant is produced by extraction from the plant using water and/or ethanol, or suppercritical carbon dioxide as solvent.
