To prevent meaningless and unwanted group control information from being displayed when a MD (disk) in which recording is performed by a MD recording and playback apparatus corresponding to group control function is played by a portable MD apparatus which does not correspond to the group control function.

This MD recording and playback apparatus is provided with a signal processing device 11, a MD drive unit 12, a control part of a microcomputer or the like, a memory 16, a key 17 operated by a user for input and a display part 18 performing interface for the user. When a MD(disk) 12a is discharged from a MD memory playback device 10 provided with group control function and inserted to the MD apparatus which is not provide with group control function and played, the group control information is eliminated form a title area when discharging the MD 12a, while the group control information is stored into the memory 16 and preserved, and can be restored as necessary.
