PURPOSE: To calculate web eccentricity with high efficiency, by detecting distribution of radiative energy radiated from flange of a steel shape and operationally processing distribution signal of this radiative energy.
CONSTITUTION: An H-shape steel 1, which has just been rolled and still hot, is placed on a roller conveyor in such a manner that its length-wise direction coincides with the roller conveyor's conveying direction. A sensor 5 measures radiative energy radiated from a flange 2 of the H-shape steel, and output from the sensor 5 is memorized by a memory circuit 7 through an A/D converter 6. An operation circuit 8 operates eccentricity of a web 3 of the H-shape steel 1 on the basis of the radiative energy distribution signal memorized by the memory circuit 7, and a result of the operation is indicated on an indicator 10.
