PURPOSE: To easily and accurately set a measurement reference point without requiring any mechanical work.
CONSTITUTION: An instrument for measuring liquid levels in tanks is equipped with a liquid level detecting means in which a coil unit having a transmission coil 22 at one end of a magnetostriction line 20 and reception coil 23 in a measuring area is housed in a pipe and a head section for housing a circuit board and having an explosionproof structure is airtightly fitted to the upper end of the pipe, and then, a magnet 13 is fitted to a float capable of stopping at a measurement reference point, counter 41 which starts to count time upon receiving a driving pulse and stops the time counting upon receiving a signal from a detection circuit 36, and data correcting means 45 which stores the count number of clocks from the coil 22 to the reference point. At the time of installing this instrument, the float is set at the reference point and the count number of clocks is stored in the correcting means 45 so that the data front the reference point to the float can be obtained.
