PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel for machine structural use having good mechanical properties and a good tool life in intermittent cutting, and a cutting method therefor.SOLUTION: A steel for machine structural use contains, in mass%, C: 0.30-0.72%, Si: 0.73-1.40%, Mn: 0.40-1.0%, Cr: 0.065-0.65%, P: 0.001-0.045%, S: 0.001-0.023%, N: 0.0036-0.0100%, and Al: 0.001-less than 0.040%, and further contains one or more selected from Ti: 0-0.500%, Nb: 0-0.500%, and V: 0-0.500%, with the balance being Fe and inevitable impurities, satisfying 0<[Ti%]+[Nb%]+[V%]≤0.500 and 42.5<66[Si%]-3[Mn%]-5[Cr%]<90.9.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
