PURPOSE: To record and reproduce various kinds of data by receiving a recording format containing a data area, first and second index areas and a card management information area in a memory card.

CONSTITUTION: The memory card 140 contains a connector 10 which is electrically connected to the control circuit 200 of an external application unit, a card controller 20 outputting a memory control signal in the card in accordance with a memory card control signal inputted from outside through the connector 10 and showing the state of the memory card and a memory 30 from/into prescribed data is read/written by the control of the memory card controller 20. The memory 30 contains the first index area 12 into which a larged storage unit attribute table is recorded, the second index area 14 into which the storage area table is recorded, the data area 16 which is divided into plural storage areas and the card management information area 18. Information can be read/ written irrespective of the type of information and the difference of the device.
