PURPOSE: To obtain a new mercaptotriazine derivative having excellent weeding activity and useful as a herbicide capable of controlling weeds which grow in a paddy field and upland and having excellent safety to crops.
CONSTITUTION: A compound, e.g., 3-(m-fluorophenyl) methylthio-5-methoxy-1,2,4- triazine, expressed by formula I [R1 is lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, benzyl or naphthyl capable of having one or more substituent groups such as halogen on an aromatic nuclei; R2 is H or lower alkyl; R3 is lower alkoxy, benzyloxy, COOH, alkoxy, cyanoalkoxy, alkoxycarbonylalkoxy or NR5R6; R5 and R6 are H or lower alkyl or R5 and R6 together form a ring; R4 is H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, phenyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl or benzyloxycarbonyl]. The compound expressed by formula I-a in the above-mentioned compound is obtained by reacting a compound expressed by formula II with diazomethane in a proper solvent.
