Title:
METAL FUEL FOR YTTRIUM AND RARE EARTH ELEMENTS STABILIZED FAST REACTOR
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH05209978
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To increase the operating temperature of a fuel in a metal fuel type fast nuclear reactor into a temperature range approximately equal to a fuel laced with zirconium, without diluting time fuel greatly.

CONSTITUTION: Yttrium, lanthanum and/or rare earth elements are added as stabilizing agents to a mixture of uranium, plutonium, and/or other actinides being an actinide-rich fuel for fast reactors, and the melting point of the fuel is raised and the mechanical characteristic is improved. Since only 1% the actinide fuel is simply yttrium, lanthanum or rare earth elements, neutron sacrifice is low, and it is possible to reduce the dimensions of the nuclear reactor core. And the fuel is burned efficiently, and the volume of nuclear wastes is reduced. When yttrium, lanthanum and/or rare earth elements are exposed to radiation in the nuclear reactor, they merely generate radioisotopes of short half value periods. Consequently, their reliable isolating conditions are lightened remarkably, and problems of nuclear waste disposal are reduced.
