Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a method for alkylating a triazine derivative by which a substituted 1,3,5-triazine derivative widely usable even as an intermediate for specialty chemicals or resin materials and flame retardant materials can readily be produced in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: This method for alkylating a 1,3,5-triazine derivative having at least one or more amino groups or mono-substituted amino groups on a ring C atom, e.g. a compound of the formula [at least one of X1 to X3 is NHR1 (R2 is H, a 1-20C alkyl or a 2-20C alkenyl); the rest are NR2R3 (R2 and R3 are each a 1-20C alkyl or a 2-20C alkenyl), a 1-20C alkyl, a 2-20C alkenyl, phenyl, a halogen, a 1-10C alkoxy or a 1-10C alkylthio] is to react the 1,3,5-triazine derivative with an alcohol of the formula ROH (R is a 1-20C alkyl or a 2-20C alkenyl) in the presence of a group VII (preferably Mn or Re) and/or a group VIII catalyst (preferably Ru or Rh) of the periodic table and alkylate at least the one or more amino groups or mono-substituted amino groups.
