PURPOSE: To cut and remove a cable sheath safely and securely by a method wherein an electric circuit is composed of a cutting blade and the metal layer of the composite covering material layer of the cable in an instant when the tip of the cutting blade pushed into the composite covering material layer touches the metal layer to inform an operator of the position of the cutting blade.
CONSTITUTION: A cutting blade 11 is gradually pushed into an outer plastic insulating layer 3b and, in an instant when the tip of the cutting blade 11 touches a metal layer 3a, an electric circuit is composed of the cutting blade 11, a infeed position detector 5 the metal layer 3a and the contact between the cutting blade 11 and the metal layer 3a is detected. An operator is informed of the detection by the alarm of a buzzer or the like. Then both the cords of the detector 5 is removed and a cutting blade infeed dial is further turned to push the cutting blade 11 into the metal layer 3a to the depth corresponding to the thickness of the metal layer 3a. After the tip of the cutting blade 3a reaches the inside surface of the metal layer 3a, the cutting blade 11 is turned along the circumferential direction. If the cutting blade 11 is moved along the axial direction after that, a composite covering material layer 3 is removed leaving a cable core 2.
