PURPOSE: To separate paramagnetic gas and non-paramagnetic gas, by introducing a gaseous mixture into a separation cell to separate the same through a gas permeable membrane and further separating said gaseous mixture by the magnetic field applied to the stream almost at right angles.
CONSTITUTION: Air 1 is purified and dried by a filtering dehumidifier 2 and subsequently supplied to a separation cell 3. The supplied air 1 is contacted with the permeable membrane 4 in the cell 3 and a part thereof passes through the permeable membrane 4 as oxygen enriched air 11 of an oxygen conc. state by the pressure difference between a high pressure side 6 and a low pressure side 7 evacuated by a vacuum pump 9. The permeable membrane 4 is adhered to a support comprising a magnetic material, especially, a metal net or fabric made of a fine iron wire. A magnetic field is vertically applied to a support 5 by the superconductive magnet of a magnetic field generator 8 to bring the vicinity of the support 5 to a high gradient magnetic field region. By this method, oxygen can be efficiently separated from nitrogen.
