Abstract:

PURPOSE: To reinforce a sheet of flexible graphite by superposing a thin film of a thermoplastic polymer on this sheet, raising the temp. of the thin film at the boundary in contact therewith to its softening point and maintaining the boundary of the thin film not in contact therewith to a temp. below the softening point, thereby fusion bonding both.
CONSTITUTION: The thin film 16 of the thermoplastic polymer (polyethylene, cellulose deriv., vinyl resin or the like) is continuously supplied from a first supply roll 15 and the sheet 19 of the flexible graphite from a second supply roll 18 to between two calender rolls 12 and 14, by which a laminate is formed. The temp. of these rolls 12, 14 is then controlled to make the temp. of the thin film 16 on the surface engaging with the sheet 19 correspondent to the softening point described above and to maintain the temp. on the opposite side thereon at the temp. of the thin film 16; <softening point. The flexible graphite sheet reinforced by fusion bonding the thin film 16 to the sheet 19 is obtd.
