To clean cleaning target parts of the surface of a religious entity sufficiently and rapidly with a liquid cleaning agent with no adverse effects of the cleaning agent on cleaning nontarget parts of the surface in order to improve the entire appearance of the entity.

A method of cleaning the surface of a religious entity comprises cleaning parts 14 and 15 of the surface of the entity foiled with gold or coated with Japanese lacquer, by means of a liquid cleaning agent. Before cleaning, parts 18 and 21 of the surface, other than the parts 14 and 15, are covered with a liquid-blocking covering material 24, and the edge of the covering material 24 is joined liquid-tightly to the edges 25 of the parts 14 and 15 of the surface in a removable way. The parts 14 and 15 of the surface other than the edges 25 are then cleaned with the cleaning agent, and the covering material 24 is removed from the edges 25 of the parts 14 and 15 of the surface.
