Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of detecting which of an empty area, TCP or hardware performance is responsible for a bottleneck in downloading a content from a server to a client.
SOLUTION: First, test data are transferred using an UDP, and if desired throughput cannot be obtained, it is determined the empty area is the bottleneck. Next, if the ratio for Th(n) of throughput Th(n+1) obtained by adding only one to make the number of TCP sessions (n) into (n+1) is larger than a predetermined value, it is decided that the protocol stack of the TCP causes the bottleneck. If the empty area and the TCP are not the bottleneck, and if the desired throughput cannot be obtained, it is decided that the hardware performance of a server or a client is the bottleneck.
