PURPOSE: To provide the method and device for discriminating the entry to mark column of document outputted from word processors, personal computers, copying machines, and facsimiles as well as documents printed out by drop-out color.
CONSTITUTION: The information on the area of document where patterns which can be recognized as mark column are printed is set as document definition information (step 10). The document is read as image data and the mark column to be identified by image data based on the document definition information is recognized. The patterns printed on the area which can be recognized as mark column is eliminated by the image data to recognize the image data of the mark column (step 20). Whether or not the information is put on the mark column by the black picture element peripheral distribution measurement is discriminated (step 30). The discrimination result is outputted (step 40).
