Abstract:
PURPOSE:To accurately position a magnetic head on a track by detecting the maximum mean output value of mean output values which increase or decrease in a constant ratio as the magnetic head shifts in the direction of a track width and shifting the position of the magnetic head to the position where the maximum mean output value can be obtained. CONSTITUTION:While shifting the magnetic head 19 in the direction of the track width by a constant distance for correspondance, the mean output value of electric signals outputted from the magnetic head 19 is detected whenever it is shifted by the constant distance, and sequentially comparing the detected mean output values with each other, the maximum mean output value of the mean output values which change at the constant ratio accompanied with the shift of the magnetic head 19, the position of the magnetic head 19 which had detected the maximum mean output value is specified and the magnetic head 19 is shifted to the specified position. Thus, the magnetic head can accurately be positioned on the track of the disk and the signal level of the maximum output can be secured.
