To attain proper fault diagnosis according to a situation by quantitatively evaluating a causal relationship between a fault and the cause of the fault and presenting items for investigation in the order of the investigation in detail according to the priority condition of investigation.
An investigation item record has an investigation condition such as a time and costs. Then, the pertinent investigation record is retrieved from a product object which breaks down and the fault phenomenon, and the priority order of the investigation condition of the investigation item is inputted, and the retrieved investigation item records are ranked according to the order, and presented in a displaying means as an investigation item list. Also, in a fault diagnosing system, a knowledge base 101 is constituted of a rule managing part 102 and an investigation information managing part 103. A fault/ phenomenon site relationship table provided at the rule managing part 102 holds and manages a casual relationship between the fault site and the constituting site as a pair, and a fault site/countermeasure relationship table holds and manages the constituting site which breaks down and the countermeasure corresponding to it as a pair.
