To drive a matrix type display device while sufficient power reduction and high display quality sufficiently suppressive in flickering are made compatible.
In a pause period T2, the potentials of data signal lines and a counter electrode of a liquid crystal panel are made almost equal to the respective centers of the voltage amplitudes in a scanning period T1. Thus, the effective voltages applied to the liquid crystal layer are almost equalized both in the scanning period T1 and the pause period T2. Moreover, in the pause period T2, AC-driving of the counter electrode is stopped first (point d), and then a source driver is brought into high impedance state (point 3). Thus, a steady-state current flowing through an amplifier in the source driver in the pause period T2 can be reduced. Therefore, low power consumption can be achieved while keeping favorable display quality by eliminating the flickers generated in each scanning period T1.
