Title:
METHOD OF FIXING METALLIC TUBE TO METALLIC TUBE PLATE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS57209790
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
1,149,387. Pipe joints. YORKSHIRE IMPERIAL METALS Ltd. 14 Sept., 1966 [14 Sept., 1965], No. 39172/65. Heading F2G. [Also in Division B3] Method of welding a metal tube 1 in an aperture in a plate 2, wherein the distance between the outer wall of the tube and the wall of the aperture increases towards the adjacent free end of the tube, comprises using an explosive charge 5 to force an inert insert 6 against the tube-bore. At least part of the length of the aperture may be tapered, or the outer diameter of the tube-end. The explosive 5 may have a detonation velocity greater than 120% of the velocity of sound in the metal of the tube or tube-plate, whichever has the higher sonic velocity. The aperture-portion 4 may follow an exponential curve or a double taper, and the short end of the tube may project beyond the plate 2 and be severed over the radiused or angled edges at the end of the aperture. To achieve a good metallurgical bond between the tube and plate, surface oxides and grease are removed before assembly. The density of the wax and sawdust plug 6 may be varied along its length, and a number of tube-ends may be secured simultaneously. Tubes of aluminiumbrass may be secured to a brass or coppernickel plate, or a copper-nickel tube may be secured to a copper-nickel or brass plate.
