PURPOSE: To allow automatic measurement without using naked eyes by storing in a frame memory a slightly short and long positions from the optimum observation position by naked eyes at a distance between an object lens of a microscope and a cell.
CONSTITUTION: The first picture of a slightly shorter position that the optimum observation position by naked eyes and the second picture of a slightly longer position than the optimum observation position are respectively stored in ranges I and II of a frame memory 6 at a distance between an object lens 2a of a microscope and a cell (culturing container). The contents of the ranges I and IIof the memory 6 are subtracted by a corresponding picture element unit by an arithmetic control unit 7, which allows film detection of data corresponding to the outer shape of the cell to enable automatic measurement without depending on naked eyes.
