To provide a method for manufacturing a composite material by which a composite material having high denseness and heat resistance (high-temperature strength) can be manufactured at a low cost and low energy by a shortened and simplified manufacturing process while dispensing with high-temperature/high-pressure conditions .
In the method for manufacturing the composite material, a mixed material 2 containing prescribed metal powder 3 and reinforcement 15 is impregnated with molten aluminum to obtain the composite material 5. An internal space 1a of a reaction vessel 1 is filled with the mixed material 2 in the form of a compact prepared by performing compaction so that a volume ratio (X) between the metal powder and the reinforcement and a porosity () satisfy a prescribed relation. Then the molten aluminum is impregnated via an impregnation hole 8a of a cover body 8.
