To provide a method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium, with which a smoothing process of a magnetic layer which has a sharp magnetic recording pattern is conducted at high speed.
The method for manufacturing the magnetic recording medium includes a step for forming a magnetic layer on a nonmagnetic substrate; a step to partly remove the magnetic layer and to form a nonmagnetic layer composed of SiO2 on the surface; and a step for subjecting the nonmagnetic layer to grind processing, until the magnetic layer is exposed, wherein the grind processing is conducted by supplying ceria slurry to the surface of the nonmagnetic layer, while rotating the nonmagnetic substrate, and pressing a running grinding tape to the surface of the nonmagnetic layer. The ceria slurry contains cerium oxide particles of which the average primary particle diameter of primary particles is within a range of 0.01-1 μm, and the average secondary particle diameter is within a range of 0.05-5 μm, and a water-based dispersant or water is used as a dispersion liquid.
