Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize hepatic reperfusion injury in a patient following surgery by using an ω-3-polyunsaturated fatty acid in a form such as of fish oil that is protected so that an effective level of peroxidation may not occur in the patient. SOLUTION: ω-3-polyunsaturated fatty acids(PuFA) is protected so that the polyunsaturated fatty acids may not cause peroxidation, particularly by capsulation or mixing with vitamin C and vitamin E and its effective dose is administered to a preoperative patient needing treating as a preoperative diet thereby minimizing the hepatic reperfusion injury. Starch is suitable as a pharmaceutically acceptable microcapsulating agent, further, those microcapsules may be coated with a coating agent as gum Arabic. The ω-3PuFA is, for example, linseed oil, Menhaden-oil, salmon oil, mackerel oil, cod liver oil or anchovy oil. In a preferred embodiment, the ω-3PuFA is eicosapentaenoic acid.
