Abstract:
To provide a liquid fuel by reducing a polyphenol-based substance or a phenol-based substance such as lignin under mild conditions.
A biomass containing a polyphenol-based substance or a phenol-based substance, a solvent having a hydrogen supply ability, a hydrogen activating catalyst, and a metal soluble to at least partially to a solvent having a hydrogen supply ability so as to generate an atomic hydrogen are mixed. According to reaction of the metal and the solvent having a hydrogen supply ability, an atomic hydrogen is generated. The atomic hydrogen with high activity is added to an aromatic ring of a polyphenol-based substance or a phenol-based substance, to reduce and liquefy the same.
