Abstract:
To produce 4,4'-(1-phenylethylidene)bisphenol in a short reaction time in a good yield by the condensation reaction of acetophenone with phenol without using a catalyst containing a metal compound such as zinc chloride so that the product having a metal concentration of ≤0.5 ppm is obtained without carrying out a metal-removing process.
The reaction is carried out in the presence of a mercapto group- having organic compound (for example, butyl mercaptan) and hydrogen chloride as catalysts under the pressurization of hydrogen chloride gas with stirring.
