To provide a method where alcohols such as cyclohexanedimethanol and the like are inexpensively and industrially produced.
Xylene and acetic acid are, for example, reacted in the presence of oxygen and a catalyst comprising palladium, superfine gold particles and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group IIA, IIIA, IVA, IIB, VB and VIII elements and alkali metals to obtain xylene diacetate. The benzene ring of the xylene diacetate is subjected to hydrogen reduction and then the obtained di(acetoxymethyl)cyclohexane is hydrolyzed to produce cyclohexanedimethanol, or the xylene diacetate is hydrolyzed and then the hydrogen reduction of the benzene ring of obtained xylene glycol is performed to produce cyclohexanedimethanol. Other alcohols are produced in the same way.
