This method for producing the (substituted) tricyclo [4.2.1.02,5]nonane-3,4,7,8-tetracarboxylic acid-3,4:7,8-dianhydride represented by the general formula [3] (R1 and R2 are each identically or dxfferently H, a 1 to 10C alkyl, phenyl, or a halogen atom, or R1 and R2 may be bound to each other to form a 4 to 10C cycloalkenyl; R3 is H or a 1 to 10C alkyl), comprising the photoaddition reaction of the maleic anhydride compound represented by formula [1] with the (substituted) bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride represented by formula [II], is characterized by using a 2 to 10C aliphatic carboxylate as a reaction solvent.
