Abstract:

To provide a method for efficiently producing an aromatic alcohol.

The method for producing the aromatic alcohol comprises bringing a reaction liquid from which an aromatic carboxylic acid is separated into contact with a base for ≥3 hr when separating the aromatic carboxylic acid from a reaction liquid obtained by oxidizing an aromatic compound represented by formula (I) [wherein n is either one of 1 to 5; the substituent group R is an alkyl, an aryl, an aralkyl, a halogen, a haloalkyl, OR1, SR1, SOR1, SO2R2, NO2, NR1R2, CH2OR1, CH(OR1)(OR2), C(OR1)(OR2)(OR3), COR1 or COCOR1 (R1, R2 and R3 are each selected from an alkyl, an aryl or a hydrogen) and R may be the same or different when n is ≥2] and obtaining an aromatic aldehyde and/or an aromatic alcohol from the residual reaction liquid.
