To provide a method for producing an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, by which the aromatic dicarboxylic acid useful as a raw material for polymers such as polyesters, polyamides, polybenzimidazoles, and polybenzoxazoles can profitably be produced.

This method for producing the aromatic dicarboxylic acid is characterized by comprising the first process for condensing a fluorenylidene bisphenol compound with a nitroarylnitrile in the presence of an alkali compound to obtain the corresponding dinitrile in which an ether bond is formed, and the second process for subjecting the dinitrile compound to a solvolysis reaction in the presence of an alkali compound in a glycol compound to obtain the corresponding dicarboxylic acid.
