To provide a method for producing dihydric phenol in a high yield by oxidizing monohydric phenol with a peroxide in the presence of a ketone and phosphoric acid by developing a highly activated acid catalyst having no corrosive properties.
When dihydric phenol is produced by oxidizing monohydric phenol with a peroxide in the presence of a ketone and phosphoric acid, a β-zeolite catalyst is used as the catalyst, in which a transition metal, a group 2B metal, a group 3B metal from the third period to the sixth period, a group 4B metal from the fifth period to the sixth period, or a lanthanide metal each having no corrosive properties is supported. By using this method, dihydric phenol is obtained in a high yield without causing the accumulation of a tar component, when monohydric phenol is oxidized with a peroxide in the presence of a ketone and phosphoric acid.
