To provide a method for producing low molecular weight chitosan excellent in safety and transfer efficiency as a carrier for transferring a gene and having little irregularity on the gene transfer activity, in good repeatability.
The method for producing the low molecular weight chitosan is characterized by comprising (1) a deacetylation process using a strong alkali, while using chitin as a raw material, (2) a cleaning process using endotoxin-free water, and (3) a molecular weight-lowering process using hydrogen peroxide. The weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of the low molecular weight chitosan is preferably 45 to 60 kDa, and the ratio (Mw/Mn) of the weight-average molecular weight (Mw) to the number-average molecular weight (Mn) is preferably 2 to 4.
