To provide a method for producing a metal matrix composite where the strength of a metal matrix composite is increased by increasing the content of a reinforcing material as its lightening is secured, and the variation of the distribution in the content of the reinforcing material is reduced.
The method for producing a metal matrix composite comprises: a stage where a billet formed of a metal matrix composite material is heated at least to the solidus temperature of a base material (aluminum alloy) 14, so as to obtain a heated billet; a stage where a filter member 41 which allows the base material of the heated billet to pass through and does not allow a reinforcing material 15 to pass through is installed in a fitting part 43 in a press die 42; a stage where the heated billet is set to the filter member; a stage where pressure is applied to the set heated billet by the press die, so as to pass through the base material in a temperature-raised state; and a stage where the filter member is separated from the base material. The filter member is arranged so as to pass through the base material in a direction almost orthogonal to the pressurizing direction. The filter member is arranged so as to pass through the base material in the pressurizing direction.
