Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining optically active 1,2-diols in high optical purity by a simple and inexpensive method.
SOLUTION: This method for producing the optically active 1,2-diols represented by the following formula [2] (wherein, R is an alkyl group, a hydroxy-substituted alkyl group or an alkenyl group) is characterized by making racemic 1,2-diols represented by the following formula [1] act on a microbial cell of a microorganism belonging to the genus Alcaligenes during culture and proliferation under aerobic conditions and recovering the optically active 1,2-diols from the resultant culture solution.
