Abstract:

To provide a method for producing optically active α-methyl- bis-3,5-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol which is an important intermediate of medicines and agrochemicals.

The optically active α-methyl-bis-3,5-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol is produced by asymmetrically methylating bis-3,5-(trifluoromethyl) benzaldehyde with dimethylzinc or methyltriisopropoxytitanium in the presence or without presence of an asymmetric catalyst prepared from optically active α,α,α',α'-tetraaryl-1,3-dioxolane-4,5-dimethanols(TADDOLs) and tetraisopropoxytitanium and the tetraisopropoxytitanium which is a cocatalyst.
